Sunkist Soda--- Good Vibrations

Best VW bus color I have seen in some time. It reminded me of my cooperfish nosedevil

Speaking of the cooperfish- I am still looking for a suitable trade (9'8 nosedevil, or device or a nice tyler craftsman or ... a vintage bing nuuhiwa.. the coop is a 10'1

Lower than lo-fi........

I am sinking lower than lo-fi ......I am getting really excited to re-visit a real interesting photographic pursuit. I am planning on spending much more time with the camera obscura (the ultimate in lo-fi photography). Lenses are really so overrated (haha)!!

This is a photograph I exposed a while ago. Its been posted here before but I figure alot of people might have missed it. I am so stoked to get out an start shooting super long exposures with infinite depths of field. My new camera has an f stop of 138 and a focal length of 25 mms.

In Rainbows: A rare occurrence

I grabbed this shot- while waiting for the wind to straighten out the morning sickness last Monday- Very rare to see full on rainbows in our neck of the woods. I was kinda surprised the rainbow survived my crappy little camera and the cross processing. This was my last shot on the roll and I wish I was able to capture the rainbow as it was hitting our surf but this was the only angle that provided enough contrast in the sky to allow the rainbow to be so intense!!

Really feeling pretty frustrated as of late as I haven't been grabbing any shots and we are in another little stretch of windblown surf. I got confronted yesterday by an older gentleman as i was snapping some shots of his canvas covered 1966 Buick- Once he saw my badly battered and duct taped Diana camera he relaxed a bit realizing that I was only harmless oddity!!!

NP: Radiohead- In Rainbows- such a masterpiece!!

A Ghost is Born..

I snapped this image on the subway back in December after the Kidman Ether show- I have always loved street photography and used to do it exclusively, but being further from an Urban area makes doing this type of work considerably more difficult. I do miss it..

an observation...

It's funny how the more I surf the more I want to surf. Its perhaps more interesting that the more I surf, the more irritable I get when I can not surf. I guess this is a tell tale sign of an addiction. At least it is a healthy addiction, provided I do not destroy my interpersonal relationships in the process ( I jest, well kind of). I also have noticed that I rely more on surfing when undergoing tricky intra-personal growth activity. surfing provides a very calming affect on my mood and mental activity, and allows me to step back from the issue at hand and gain some perspective.

This past week I got in the water for five sessions. This is pretty good by my winter standards as the lack of light, a work schedule that makes dawn patrol impossible, unfavorable winds and limited free time on the weekends really gets in the way. I guess for me, its important to fully recognize the experience of surfing as it occurs and to stay in the moment as much as possible, as one never knows when the next opportunity for surf may occur again.

Fresh Fish.....

Hoping to score some fresh fish tomorrow- "swellnofo" is playing with my mind again- that green guy of Swellinfo's Long Beach NY report is quite elusive.

5'4 Pavel Creekfish awaiting its turn in the rotation

Had a fun afternoon session yesterday. Low tide waist/stomach high bowly little waves coming in, albeit a bit inconsistent. I actually got to spend some time figuring out my Cherry Simms 21 (Simmons style board)- I am very stoked as the board has full-on hull planing speed with incredible fish properties (front foot surfing with back foot over the fin cluster). The board is so fast and it likes to stay close to the pocket. I can't wait to take it out on an chest/shoulder high incoming tide swell- looks like she will love long open walls. It feels good to be back in the ocean more frequently. The water is cold but still very tolerable (40 degrees Fahrenheit), but the temp will certianly keep dropping over the next six or seven weeks.

Winter at Ted's

I snapped this shot a couple of weeks ago- I love boat yards in the winter- so quiet and filled with stillness, and timelessness. hoping to get the Simms 21 in the water after work today- very excited to get a sense of what this board will do.

Finally, A Shift in the Weather Pattern.. WAVES!

After 18 days of sheer flatness- we were finally granted some waves with favorable wind conditions yesterday. Water has definitely dropped a few degrees but its never as bad as you imagine it to be. The morning brought stomach to chest with occasional shoulder/head sets. Strong north winds with lots of spray!! killer rainbow over the ocean to boot. I doubt my lo-fi crappy camera captured the rainbow but i snapped a few anyway.

I surfed at an uncrowded spot with a fellow Josh Hall long fish simmons aficionado- I cannot speak enough about how much I dig my 6'9 long fish simmons- for me its the perfect combo of glide, turnability and smoothness- handles late drops so nicely!!!

I actually got the rare double session in yesterday afternoon- the swell dropped off a bit but the wave was considerably more bowly with the lower tide- still jello glass- i took out my newest addition to the quiver family (John Cherry 7'2 Simms 21)- too new to review but I am intrigued!! Seems to have full-on hull hum speed with very fishy handling- perfect combo in my opinion.

Froth after Ether...

Grabbed this shot of Froth AKA the militant one after the Kidman Ether art exhibition. my trusty diana got locked on the bulb setting- shooting ilford delta 3200. I was really impressed with kidman's prints- he seems to be able to capture low light situations in a manner that evokes a strong mood for the moment as it occurs.

Blister in the Sun

Vintage 'Vette, about as cool as they come...... tried to blast this shot off while driving.

Ratrods....

Dragstrip acceleration, five speeds and limited handling...... Start your engines!!!

The freakshow in my mind.....

Well the freak show in my mind continues as the board quiver rotation continues... just sold my fineline microant II and a larry mabile swift movement twin keel to fund a purchase of a 7'2 John Cherry Simms 21. Can't believe I am left with no hulls considering the fanaticism I experienced for them over the last two years. I'll post pics of the simms when she arrives- Hoping that she has hull-like trim speed with the ability to turn harder off the tail.

absurdity of form revisited

this is one of my favorite shots over the last three months- i posted a while back but thought I'd put it up again. Haven't been shooting much as a result of the cold and the HORRENDOUS WAVES of lat. I am getting CRANKY!!!

Winter Hull

Here is my friend Ken with his old "winter hull". Seems like the displacement hull is a thing of the past for the hulltastic voyage creators. too bad- such a funny blog!!

It is,dreadfully FLAT - no end in sight either....

log march

x processed- expired ektachrome 200 - modified brownie hawkeye... still flat which is okay - battling a little sinus infection- sick of the winter big time!!!

sea kayak rack

I have been shooting a lot of color film as of late- this is a completely new avenue for me and one that I am hoping to have some success with. Until recently I was somewhat "color phobic"- feeling that in someway the addition of color to the photograph might ultimately serve to distract the viewer from my intended message (both emotional and from a form/composition perspective). While I am still unsure how I feel about the use of color, I am open to continued exploration of this aspect of the photographic medium, despite some recent criticism I have received from the lo-fi community.

The absurdity of form #3

I have always been intrigued by the ghostly quality of old boat yards. I love poking around to see remnants of Neptune's residue.
I am in a bit of a retreat since the New Year. It's nice reconnecting with the quiet of Winter. Unfortunately, no waves on tap for the up coming week.

'66 Hansen 50/50

Here is a shot of my vintage hansen 50/50. Apparently people either love em or hate em. so far I am in the love 'em camp. so wide, nice refined rails and nice east coast beach break rocker.

Back to the grind today- felt good!!!

one for surf check lenny

My man Lenny is always reliable with his morning surf check texts. The text comes in like some no nonsense, military-like classified info- example: "chest -going" or "knee- longboardable" or "flat-paddling out anyway!!"
Some super fun waves yesterday-my first time on a fish since thanksgiving- such a good way to start 2010. Tons of rights- very unusual around these parts- so fun to watch all my spoiled goofy footed friends going right.
