good to get wet again..

I got in yesterday for the first time in over three weeks. The water is starting to make that chilly change but it felt really good to reconnect with the movement of the ocean. the waves were less than memorable but nonetheless it was a pleasure to be on a wave again. hopefully more is to come!!- here is my first attempt at using a polaroid...the whole process feels kinda fun. who doesnt like instant gratification minus the pixels

open spaces..

Ocassionally open spaces are possible in NY, however more often than not even the line-up feels over populated.

New York Autumn Sky

This shot was taken last year at about this time. Early morning after a front moved through- late sunrise and explosive clouds. Got a feeling the sky might look similar today.

Goat's Head Soup..

I have been struggling through a little flat spell as of late. No water time in the last two weeks and this coming week looks questionable too. Seems these flat spells really hit me on two levels. Can't surf, Can't shoot.. Here is a shot from a recent visit to a petting zoo... I guess flat spells do provide opportunities open the eyes to other photographic possibilities

dwindling morning light

Swell reports around here have been dreadful. no hope for waves in the near future either..between the dwindling morning light and the strong westerly wind flow-things can get kinda bleak around here.

Retro before Retro...

Jeff's been riding his Dewey Weber performers since the beginning. Retro logging before retro was part of the surf vernacular. He's got such a smooth, understated style. Ask him about his drop knee turns and he just laughs, " I don't know about drop knee turns, i just turn the board when it needs to be turned". He's also quite the East Coast Surf historian and he's got crazy archival footage of NY surfing from the sixties too boot!!

three days of loggin'

I had the pleasure of three straight days of loggin'. While the waves were small, the winds were quite favorable making for a nice opportunity to re-connect with trim. Absolutely loving my 9'9 tyler pintail.

These smaller days can provide such a real state of relaxation and an opportunity to share a killer sunrise while catching up with surf friends. Hard not to find gratitude when surrounded by such serenity and dynamic beauty.

The lack of hype, frantic cell phone calls, aggressive attitudes all contribute to a very satisfying surf session. loggin is the ultimate anti-adreneline!!

This shot was snapped yesterday with my crappy medium format water cam. If you like what you see pass it on (link www.Saltstainedeyes.blogspot.com to your blog) or hit the f button below to share it on your fb page.

Are you part of a Colony....?

I grabbed this shot while walking the beach just as the wind died on Saturday evening. Old glory laying slack is always a nice site. Unfortunately I didn't have access to the surf due to family commitments. This spot had the most beautiful little log wave coming, thru still kinda bumming i missed it.

Happy Columbus Day weekend, check my friends out at colony blog or at their colony website A good collaborations between salt stained eyes and colony to follow!! stay d-tuned..

early morning creeping

I shot just as the sun rose above the horizon on Saturday. So many surf zombies creeping the boards in the pre-dawn light. Marvin is always patrolling with this log in tow.

evening glass off

Surfing is such a waiting game here on the east coast.. between the inconsistent surf, tide sensitive breaks and insanely fickle winds things can get very frustrating. Casing point, this past Saturday- three trips to the beach with three different experiences 1)dawn patrol - closed out minus tide swell with sideshore conditions, 2)mid afternoon- offshore until I paddled out, wind turned onshore after one wave (not a memorable session), 3) later that evening- dead wind, jello glass waves and me unable to get it due to family commitments. so it goes, its tough being an surf addict..

Igor... Post Session

Here is a shot of my brother, Martin and Balaram Stack after a pretty insane day at Lido. Extremely crowded, big and bowly- Only the heavys were making waves. These guys look pretty amped about their session. Mart commented that the lineup was like a morning commute in mid-town manhattan...crazy crowds with lots of different types of license plates in the lot.

family affair

one from last month..my kind of quality family time.... having family dinners is proven to be a protective factor for children and adolescents, I can only imagine what type of positive influence family surf sessions will have... sounds like a research idea..
