Camera Obscura in motion

A couple of experimental shots using my pinhole camera. Self-portraits on my long skate with exposure times approximately 10 seconds while in motion. Pinhole cameras have no lenses and require long exposure times- infinite depth of field are the result of the extremely small apertures. Gonna revisit this idea with some ilford delta 3200 in order to cut exposure times down to a couple of seconds.

On another note- I will be helping out with the NY Fish Fry(e) blog- here is the link:

http://www.fishfryny.blogspot.com/

My hope is that the blog becomes a celebration of the fish and all the vital people who have been involved with the platforms evolution. I'd love it if readers sent me some fishy photos and I'll post up the ones that seem special. email me your pics/ideas and such to: brullj@gmail.com

Peruvian Sleds

I shot this sometime ago when in Peru. Amazing to watch the fishermen paddle these out past the line up. also amazing to watch them surf in after fishing. my kind of commercial fishing..

I didn't know NY had a monsoon season

Heavy rain, driving off shore winds and big swell around today. only saw one guy in the line up this morning and he got drilled on some well overhead sets. hoping for more manageable conditions tomorrow.

maiden voyage

got my new cooperfish nosedevil wet for the first time this mornng- extremely excited about the board as it seems to be the perfect size (9'8) and a nice compliment to my malibu foil II.
Sure did not feel like spring this morning. Seems like the 5/4 and booties and mittens will be around for a bit longer. i am really over the cool as of late.

Absurdity of Form V

I am not sure why vinyl or canvas covered modes of transportation interest me so much, but I can not seem to resist exposing some film when i see them. For the most part the pics are sub par but every once in a while a cool one emerges. I like the symmetry of this one.

So much for Storm Fences

I made this photograph after last week's hurricane-like storm (sustained winds of over 75 mph). Well, I guess little strips of wood and wire are no match for the power of ocean in the throws of a rather epic storm. If you think the fence looks bad you should see the destruction to the dunes. Intense for sure.

Done deal....

Once again I'd like to thank anyone who sponsored a shavee- at the moment about 12 million dollars has been raised for St Baldrick's. The moneys go to research aimed at finding cures for childhood cancer. I am honored to have been involved and have found the experience to be very powerful and thought provoking. I also enjoy my new aerodynamic approach to surfing.

Depth and Perception

A shot from last Sunday's swell- I like the depth that is evoked by the blurred edges the diagonal lines of foam and the positioning of the guys getting ready for the paddle out

Crowded Line-Up

The line-ups in New York are too crowded even in the winter.

a split second from sunday

bitchen beater...

I see this car all over town, I always try and grab a picture of it but more often than not the photos are subpar. I don't know whose ride it is but its always parked at the surf breaks. I kinda dig its decayed state and the fact that its always parked around the surf.

A Sunday in March

Here is a photograph from 3/14. Pretty big day by New York standards. I shot this with my old minolta 35 mm and I have to say I enjoyed the increased controls of using a "real" analogue camera. The film was cross processed. I probably will be using the camera a bit more in future.

I just wanted to thank all the people who have donated/sponsored me for the St. Baldricks Event- I am touched by people's generosity and willingness to support an excellent cause. I feel a depth of gratitude to all have contributed.

I am looking forward to the subtle lessons learned from my balding. If you havent donated and would like to its not too late.

winter light

Here is a shot from the beginning of the winter that I initially overlooked. On second inspection, I kind of like the image as it captures the excitement of running down to the water's edge.

I have been busy editing my photographs for inclusion in a book that will be released in June. The book will focus on the lo-fi aesthetic in photography. I hope to have between 5-10 images included with an interview. More information to follow.

Surf was pretty exciting yesterday albeit out of my comfort zone. Hopefully, I snapped a few good ones as I shot four rolls. The light was rather suspect so who knows. Hoping for continued off shore conditions for tomorrow afternoon as I won't be able to get to the beach today.

Lastly, I am still hoping that readers here will support my efforts to raise money for childhood cancer research. Please sponsor me in my head shaving, which will occur tomorrow evening (3/16) as part of "Saint BALDrick's Day".

I am hoping that in addition to monies raised that the shaving will be an opportunity for me to deepen my sense of humility and compassion. Again included is the link - if you can donate anything ($5, $10, $25 etc) it would be appreciated and go a long way to helping the efforts:

donald, lance and hansen

The New York Fish Frye has just announced the 2010 dates- It will be either 5/15 or 5/16 depending on the waves and weather. The event starts at 9AM and continues on. Over the last several years the event has had a great turn out with some insane fish to frye. Shapers such as manny c., j. hall, c. christenson, petro, mayo and kenvin have attended. Whats really great about the event is that its not at all commerically geared- just a time to talk with the "fish brotherhood"

I am soliciting fishy photos for potential use on the fishfryny blog- if ya got something cool to share email me at brullj@gmail.com

Here is the link to the official ny fish fry blog: http://fishfryny.blogspot.com/

Late winter shadows.

Well about this time of year, I really get sick of strapping on the 5/4 milimeter wetsuit and 7 mil boots and mittens. What is almost as annoying as putting the suit on is trying to dry it out quickly.

Below is a link to the VANS blog- yesterday they stumbled upon my skate shot and posted a bunch of pictures of mine. funny how things get around on the web.

http://thevansblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/heres-salt-in-your-eye.html

Also if ya can spare a couple of bucks- anything will do- please consider donating to the saint baldrick's cause. Saint baldrick's raises an incredible amount of money each year to fund research related childhood cancers. I will be a shavee and will post some saltstained pictures of my unsightly bald head once the shaving is complete 3/16/10. Any $ would be appreciated ...

Feels like Spring..

Felt good to slip the vans on and hop on the longskate for a little while this week.

I have recently signed up to be part of a childhood cancer awareness/fundraiser event entitled: St Baldricks. As a participant I will be shaving my head on 3/16 in an effort to show solidarity with individuals undergoing cancer treatments. If you feel inclined to sponsor me on this endeavor please click the link below and donate what you can- thanks in advance for the support!!

Nietzsche's dictum

"He who has a why to live can bear with almost any how"

Here is a grossly under exposed negative from my pre-dawn surf check wanderings on Saturday morning. While the negative is grossly underexposed due to my crappy little camera and expired ektachrome 100, i do feel the image captures the beauty that is evident in dawn patrol.
PS the nosedevil is gone....

Fish and Chips are good...

But I much prefer Fish and Logs...

Pretty decent weekend of surf, warmish weather. clean lines. Getting so sick of the five mil wetsuit, 7 mil mittens and booties though- looking forward to Spring big time. 4/3 weather would be nice

PS Looking to sell my 10'1 nose devil to fund a 9'8 nosedevil- any interest shoot me an email brullj@gmail.com

Thanks Mr. Cherry

Here are a couple of lo-fi grabs of my 7'2 John Cherry Simms 21- I absolutely love this board- the craftsmanship is top notch. For me simmons type boards combine the best aspects of displacement hulls and fish platforms.

Winter Buoys

I have been spending some time wandering around boat yards as of late.
