Small Mysteries- The Wonderous Resurgence of Analogue Surf Photography in the Digital Age- by Andrew Smith for the Surfer's Path-80th issue surf photo special.

Andrew beautifully articulates what I have been unable to when attempting to describe my draw to analog photographic equipment. I am happy to have been asked to contribute work for the article. The photographers I share the pages with are as truly unique as Andrew's words about what we do. I am please to be included with the likes of Ryan Tatar, Cher Pendarvis Erica Doria, Morgan Maassen, Keith Novosel, Simon Perini and Liz Lantz. Check the issue out if you like an alternative view of surf photography.

This is one of the images I printed for the Ny Surf Film Festival. The print is 22x22inches printed on a heavy duty textured rag paper. I like the painterly quality of the image and the muted tones. This image is part of a three print series all taken within a 5 minute span of time one early spring morning.

A Dad's perspective... Firsts...

Memories are at times etched into the recesses of one's mind. Seeing your child for the first time, first foot steps, the instant your child is off and riding a two wheeler unsupported, first rides on a roller coaster, first swim strokes and the inevitable first paddle out. I am grateful for these memories as they keep me smiling and in-touch with the splendors of everyday life.

New York Surf Film Festival- This Weekend

Really looking forward to attending tonights opening night of the New York Surf Film Festival in tribeca.

I believe this is the third year of the event and each year the line-up continues to grow. The event is a celebration of the beauty and uniquiness of what we do.. it also provides an opportunity to see some of the more important arty surf films and some more underground projects. check out more about the festival at www.nysff.com

I was asked along with Tommy Colla to provide some recent photographic for the festival- so look out for some large salt stains..

Balaram Stack and Sean Killarney

I grabbed this image on Monday 9/20 after Balaram and Sean were finished with their session at Lido. Igor swell was providing some pretty substantial swell with plenty of stand up barrels to be had. Seemed to the observer, that only a few in the crowded line up had the skills to really see the full potential of the wave.

For those not in the know, these two guys (Stack and Killarney) epitomize the best of the new york talent pool. Bal is making head way in his quest to move up the pro ranks (Recent win in the Unsound Pro mens), and Sean is a charger in a true sense of the term. Sean has surfed the biggest, hairiest surf that has hit New York historically (think March 11th, and Saint Patty's Day). Serious props to both guys !!

I remember..

I have spend a lot of time on the boardwalk at Long Beach, NY- i remember long walks on it with my grandmother when i was just a small child. I remember the old amusement park, the frozen custard, and skeetball. I remember renting bike as a school boy and feeling free as long as i stayed in the bike lane. I remember splinters and italian ices. I remember hanging out under the boardwalk watching the moon, hoping, hoping....the moment would be right; I remember many a surf check conversations, rain, snow, sunrise, sunset. i remember hurrying down to the boardwalk after my brother tragically passed on, hoping to feel close to him, i remember seeing my very pregnant wife walking up the ramp to meet me after a surf. i remember.... it all.

September in NY.....

not a bad hurricaine season thus far. A fun weekend of waves, with more on tap for today.

Toycam-Lo-Fi Photography- the book

well after a year and several months the Toycam-lo-fi photography decided the book is ready for publication. over 100 photographs, 49 different photographers and six interviews (me included) are part of the volume. Clearly an excellent survey of the current world of lo-fi photography- check the links below for more info about ordering and previewing the book- much thanks to the people who devoted so much time to this project.

lo-fi crappy snap experiments..

I am still trying to get a handle on using the lo-fi cam in the water. stiff shutter release button, slow shutter speeds,d hand winding the film advance, limited exposures per roll make it interesting to try and capture such a dynamic and fast moving environment. This images is cropped from a 2 1/4 negative. stay tuned..

Beach Junker and a nice peak..

I grabbed this photograph shortly after a guy dropped his bike off and ran out into the line-up. Something about rusty less than beautiful bicycles and crappy lensed cameras works so well for me. I love the peak in the background and its understood why the guy was so quick to abandon his junker at the water's edge..

watching the Hurley Trestles Contest online makes me think of the three days i spend there in july- what an awesome place..

It always amazes me how two people can have vastly different internal experiences despite their close physical proximity... here seems to be thoughts of anticipation versus reflection..

Closing Time

I grabbed this shot of James as he was getting out of the water after the start of Earl. I like grabbing shots of guys as they are leaving the water-it seems like there is more spontanity with regards to the expression of emotion as they are exiting the water. James is an early morning regular at one of the spots i surf. He spent the second summer in a row wandering around the rugged coast of New Zealand.

On another note my four day weekend didnt pan out the way i hoped... damn flatness... I was able to get my daughter Avery out for her first paddle out. So funny to see her paddling my tyler and then mini-simms out. She got one wave on her belly which ended not so smoothly.. she came up with a smile on her face though.. so it goes another convert
